The electrode plates are the heart of every water ionizer. They determine electrolysis efficiency, hydrogen output, durability, and long-term safety. This is the single most important hardware specification.
The international standard for electrolysis plates is medical-grade titanium coated with platinum. Titanium meets ISO 5832-2 — the same standard used for surgical implants. Platinum coating ensures efficient electrolysis and prevents metal leaching into your water over years of daily use.
Surface area matters. Larger plates mean greater contact with water during electrolysis, which directly determines hydrogen concentration and ORP depth. SOMAWA uses from 5 to 64 sintered platinum-titanium plates (fused at 1,200°C) — from 5-plate home systems to 64-plate commercial installations.

Some mass-market ionizers use stainless steel plates or low-grade titanium with thin, inconsistent platinum coating. These plates corrode over time, reducing performance and potentially leaching metals into your drinking water.
Ask the brand: What is the grade of your titanium? What is the thickness of your platinum coating? Can you show independent metallurgical test reports? If they cannot answer these questions clearly, that tells you something.
Ask for: ISO 5832-2 compliance certificate, platinum coating thickness report (microns), third-party metallurgical lab results.
The rule is simple: medical-grade titanium, platinum-coated, with large surface area. If a brand cannot show you these specifications with third-party verification, move on.

ORP — Oxidation-Reduction Potential — measures the electrical charge of water in millivolts. Negative ORP means the water carries extra electrons. Positive ORP means the water takes electrons away. This is measurable, testable, and the single most ignored specification in the ionizer industry.
Positive ORP. Oxidising. This is what most Indian households drink daily. RO purification removes contaminants effectively but leaves water with a positive charge — the opposite of what mountain spring water carries naturally.
Negative ORP. Antioxidant. Extra electrons available for neutralising free radicals. This is the same electrical characteristic found in glacial meltwater from Hunza Valley and natural springs in Okinawa, Japan.
